Spine Tumor Initiative

Our team of spine surgeons and oncologists from the University of Miami and Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center have extensive experience in managing the most complex spinal tumors at any stage of the disease. Whether it’s a patient with a newly diagnosed spinal tumor that needs a complete workup and treatment plan, or a patient who needs evaluation for potential surgery or radiation therapy, our team of specialists offers the most technologically advanced interventions for treatment. These include biopsies for diagnosis, vertebroplasties or kyphoplasties to stabilize spine fractures or complete tumor resection with instrumentation of the spine when necessary. We use innovative therapies such as cooling the patient’s body temperature during surgical removal of certain tumors that are within the substance of the spinal cord to maximally protect normal neural structures during surgery. Our team of radiation oncologists uses precisely targeted beams of radiation guided by high resolution imaging scans to deliver lethal doses of radiation therapy to tumor cells while avoiding normal cells and tissues.
