A study published by researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine describes that certain proteins playing a role in cancer progression and metastasis are stored as amyloid bodies in dormant cancer cells. Once the amyloid bodies disaggregate, the cancer cells become active again. The findings were published in the journal Developmental Cell.

In a research study published in the journal Oncogene, scientists from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center showed that by therapeutically targeting the receptor for advanced glycation end-products (RAGE) in breast cancer cells, they decreased tumor growth, reduced tumor angiogenesis and recruitment of inflammatory cells, and dramatically decreased metastasis to the lung and the liver.

By reducing NFκB signaling, miR-181a controls tumor cell proliferation and survival and could be the target of novel therapies.

Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of UHealth – the University of Miami Health System, recently joined the Oncofertility Consortium, a national, interdisciplinary initiative designed to explore the reproductive future of cancer survivors. A recent study by researchers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York, published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), showed that patients treated at cancer centers that are part of an elite group of academic cancer research centers have a 10 percent lower chance of dying in the first year after diagnosis than those treated at community hospitals.

In honor of World Cancer Day on February 4, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of UHealth – the University of Miami Health System, and Miami International Airport (MIA) hosted free head and neck cancer screenings and consultations for more than 85 airport employees. Sylvester doctors, nurses and residents were inside MIA’s North Terminal to conduct the screenings and educate MIA employees about head and neck cancers.

Researchers from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center have published a study showing that African-American pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma patients have inferior overall survival to their white and Hispanic peers. The findings, published in the journal Pediatric Blood & Cancer, are the largest study yet on racial and ethnic disparity in the pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma population.
